$SBUX killed the $CMG takeover rumor by saying “we’re not buying” the burrito chain. It was one of the easier no deal calls since nobody was asking for a caffeine bowl anyway. Previously there was a report of exploring a takeover.

$SBUX $CMG merger offers the wrong kind of synergy. The overlap between the two brands is unlikely to be enough to justify a takeover premium.

Putting the band back together is surely a great feeling, but a dubious corporate strategy. Starbucks chief Brian Niccol has considered a merger with Chipotle, his $41bn rival — and former employer — the FT reported on Thursday. However neat the match might seem from Starbucks’ corner office, it makes little sense for shareholders.
Niccol knows Chipotle very well indeed. He ran the Mexican-themed restaurant chain for six years before decamping in 2024 to the world’s biggest coffee chain, which was then in a state of considerable disarray. Seen from afar, the two do faintly similar things, serving comestibles to customers who are in a hurry. Both have large, sometimes restive workforces.
Moreover, the ways in which they differ might seem from a distance like opportunities. Chipotle’s balance sheet is free of debt; gearing it up a little could provide low-hanging fruit. And while Starbucks has a sprawling global network, Chipotle has yet to venture outside the US, apart from a smattering of international stores.
But do these companies really belong together? Not really. For one, the overlap is unlikely to be enough to justify a takeover premium. Imagine Niccol could shave 10 per cent off Chipotle’s food, drink and packaging costs and halve its general overheads. That would save $770mn a year, Lex

A TON OF THINGS HAPPENED IN THE STOCK MARKET TODAY.
Here's a full recap:
1. OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue was approaching $50B at the end of September, according to the Financial Times, below the roughly $70B figure that had been widely reported last month. The discrepancy reportedly reflects differences in accounting methods, with Anthropic including revenue generated through cloud partners such as AWS and Google Cloud, while OpenAI does not. Investors had attempted to adjust OpenAI’s figures to make them comparable with Anthropic’s, contributing to the higher estimate. The report weighed on AI infrastructure sentiment, with several semiconductor stocks falling roughly 5–7% as investors reassessed near-term AI spending expectations. OpenAI declined to comment.
2. The September FOMC meeting minutes showed that most Federal Reserve officials expect another interest rate hike by year-end, reinforcing the central bank’s higher-for-longer stance. All 19 Fed officials supported the September rate hike, reflecting unanimous concern that inflation remains above target. The minutes also said almost all policymakers believe inflation risks remain tilted to the upside, with several officials warning that the accelerating AI investment boom could increase demand faster than supply, adding to inflationary pressures.
3. Elon Musk said today that he sees an extraordinary long-term future for $SPCX SpaceX, writing: “This will sound super crazy, but I see a path to SpaceX

2/ If it moves forward, a potential $SBUX/ $CMG merger would be one of the largest restaurant acquisitions in history. In 2014, Burger King acquired Canadian chain Tim Hortons in an $11.4 billion deal. At CMG’s current price, this would be a $41 billion deal. It is unclear if SBUX has made a formal offer for the fast casual chain. $CMG has struggled since Brian Niccol’s departure (CMG -40%, SPX +42%). Other than synergies, a key question is what Brian Niccol would do differently than CMG’s current management team.
